BarnLoft

In the story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” the barn loft is my favorite example of symbolism because, to me, it symbolizes Doodle’s ability to overcome obstacles that he was facing. Doodle’s brother was ashamed of his disability and worked very hard to help him overcome those disabilities because he was ashamed to have a brother who would never learn to walk. In the barn loft of their home the family stored all of the items they purchased for Doodle such as the coffin they thought he would need as a baby, and the wagon his brother pulled him around in since he could not walk. These items are a symbol of Doodle’s ability to overcome the obstacles in life that others thought he would never overcome.
